Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a scuba diving certification in Australia?

Most Open Water courses take three to four days full time, or two to three weekends part time. Doing the theory online beforehand shortens the time you spend at the dive school.

How much does scuba diving certification cost in Australia?

Advertised Open Water prices run from about $400 to $900, depending on the location and what is included: boat dives, gear hire, online theory, the certification fee and any medical.

What age do you need to be to scuba dive in Australia?

Children can start a Junior Open Water course from age 10, with depth and buddy limits that ease as they get older. Junior certifications become full Open Water at 15.

Do I need to know how to swim to learn to scuba dive?

Yes, but you do not need to be fast. The Open Water course includes a 200 metre swim, any stroke and with no time limit, and a 10 minute float or tread.

Which scuba certification agency is best in Australia?

PADI, SSI and NAUI cards are all recognised worldwide, and their entry-level courses teach the same core skills. The instructor and the dive school matter more than the agency.
